The Virginian-Pilot staff photographer Stephen M. Katz and Getty Images photographer John Moore have received the top honors in the 2008 Pictures of the Year International contest, which is currently underway at the University of Missouri.

Katz was named newspaper photographer of the year for work that includes images of the Iraq War, as well as three series shot in Nigeria covering leprosy, mental illness and Nigerians wounded by gasoline-tainted kerosene.

Moore was voted magazine photographer of the year for a portfolio that includes his widely published photograph “Memorial Day at Arlington,” which captured a young woman mourning the death of her fiancé who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. In December, Moore witnessed the attack that killed Benazir Bhutto. (Related story.)
