Frank Grisdale – Rothko Inspired

By Wise Elephant • May 19th, 2008 • Category: Elephant Food (almost-daily images, videos, etc.)

A beautiful place to visit is the Rothko Chapel in Houston – founded by John and Dominique de Menil in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief. It is a small meditative space with 8 huge single and sets of dark toned paintings by Rothko – all arranged in the circular building, lt simply by a large skylight. It takes a while to see the tones and colors of the paintings – not until your eyes are accustomed to the dark do you start to see the work clearly. The brilliance of that is you must sit for a while till you can begin to appreciate the paintings, and you can’t help but get into a meditative state while waiting. Then you are spending time staring at each dark toned piece to ’see’ all each work has to offer. The thing about Rothko paintings is that you can’t see the brush strokes.

This landscape photograph, while much happier in tone, is Rothko inspired.
