wise elephant, making it happen

Photographing Anika

By Megan • Mar 26th, 2008 • Category: Elephant Food (almost-daily images, videos, etc.)

To create this sensual portrait of Anika required combining different light sources and settings. Using a light meter, I measured the available light at 4 sec. @ ƒf5.6. I planned on underexposing the ambient light by two stops to maintain the gothic feel of the room. I placed a flash with a warming gel to camera right. This helped bring the flash’s color temperature closer to that of the chandelier and candles. I adjusted the camera’s settings to 1 sec. @ ƒ5.6. and turned the flash’s modeling light off. As the shutter was tripped the flash fired immediately, and the long shutter speed allowed enough time to expose the ambient light. Combining the light that was available, and adding my own strobe, allowed me to create this dramatic portrait.
