wise elephant, making it happen

Photographing Rena

Creating a large light source with harder edged shadow transitions required careful positioning of strobes and scrims. I suspended a 10′ by 10′ white scrim directly overhead, parallel to the ground. I secured a strobe above and slightly to the left of my model, Rena. Notice the hard edge transition from highlight to shadow. This was achieved by keeping the strobe close to the scrim. I placed a 4′ by 8′ white scrim to camera right, about 3 feet in front of me. Bouncing a second strobe into the scrim filled in the shadows to a contrast ratio of 1:6. By reflecting the strobes, I created a wide light source, keeping the shadows dramatic and creating texture.
