wise elephant, making it happen

Let it roll!

“It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business.” from The Godfather, 1972

The above line has sprung lots of marketing and business posts on the good/bad, truth/lies, aspect of seeing the world through this separation. Most reflect the error of treating people poorly no matter what, which I agree with, and more importantly being able to identify and depersonalize poor treatment when it occurs, to let it roll, and to seek to solve the problem rather than “take it personally”. Not easy to do as we’re people, not robots. When we are treated poorly it’s hard to get past the immediate, focus on the longer term, and modify accordingly.

This story in the Indystar points out the ripple effect when folks take it personally. In short, a new regime sought to initiate their new rules, the current staffers took is personally, fought back in what could be deemed as un-pro (or revolutionary, it matters by which side you’re on, we’re not taking sides, just pointing out the issue). But the worst of it all is that the clients (in this case “the people”) became the unknowing receivers of the ills, which then in turn, caused even more damage flowing back. It could have stopped at the drop, instead this one rippled. Let it roll!

Revised property tax values tied to assessors’ tiff

Many appeals will be successful, Price predicted, creating a cash crunch for local government, libraries and other agencies as the money is returned to property owners.”
